ALFRED O'BRIEN Obituary

Alfred Joseph O'Brien, of Lindstrom formerly of Grasston, passed away on Thursday, February 8, 2024, at his home.  He was 89 years old.

Alfred was born on January 12, 1935, in Watertown, Minnesota to parents James and Clara (Kuchenmeister) O'Brien.   He grew up in the middle of 11 children on the family farm near Watertown, Minnesota.

He enlisted in the United States Navy on July 16, 1952.  He spent his 18th birthday on guard duty in a jungle in the Philippines serving during the Korean War.  He was proud to be part of the Navy SeaBees before being honorably discharged on October 11, 1955.  Upon returning home, Alfred worked on Lake Traverse for a few years, supervising the commercial fishing on the lake.   He then studied at Dunwoody where he learned the carpentry trade.

Alfred was united in marriage to Arlene Anderson on June 21, 1958, at the St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Mora.  They made their home for the next 20 years in Columbia Heights where they were blessed with eight children. He also served as a Boy Scout Leader for his boys and many others. In 1980, the family moved to a hobby farm near Grasston where they raised beef, chickens, ducks, and crops.   After Arlene’s passing in 1986, Alfred saw to the continued care of all his kids.  Alfred always said his biggest accomplishment in life was raising eight strong and compassionate children.  Not only a jack of all trades on his own, Alfred took the time to teach anyone how to complete a task or job, making them better for his knowledge and expertise on any subject.

Alfred spent the majority of his career as a commercial construction superintendent working for DJ Kranz construction.  In 1993, he retired after 34 years on the job.  In 2000, Alfred sold the farm to his youngest son Jeff and moved to Wyoming, Minnesota where he spent 10 years before making his final move to Lindstrom.

Alfred was one of the founding members of Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic church in Braham.  He, along with Fr. Zimmer, helped design, source materials, and build the church in Braham.  He personally designed the woodwork behind the Altar.  A faithful and devout Catholic, Alfred also served as a Eucharistic minister for many years.   Most of all, Alfred loved his family.  Time spent with his children, grandchildren, and many, many extended family members were treasured moments.  He will be dearly missed.

Alfred is preceded in death by his parents, wife Arlene, grandson Jeremy, siblings Richard (Helen), Vivian (Tom) Meade, James, LeRoy, Earl, and Daniel (Mary).

He is survived by children Michael, Dean (Deb), Douglas (Jeri), Kenneth (Lois), Janice (Bryan) Bergschnieder, Jeffrey (Gwen), Nancy (Phil) Witucki, and Linda (Tim) Koehler; 25 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; siblings, Glen, Gilbert (Sharon), Terry (Betty), and June (John "Ferdy") Hanson; sister-in-law Laura O'Brien; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to family members who will donate the funds to the Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church building remodel. Al was integral in the building of the original church therefore it would be very meaningful for him to be part of the remodel.
