Arvid Leroy Morris passed away on Saturday, December 10, 2022, at GracePointe Crossing in Cambridge, Minnesota. He was 96 years old.
Arvid was born June 10, 1926, in Andover, South Dakota, to Roy and Edna (Kimpel) Morris. In his early years his family moved, first to Storm Lake, Iowa, then to St. Paul, where he spent the remainder of his youth. Arvid graduated from Wilson High School in June of 1944. A few days later he was on a cattle car bound for the naval training station at Farragut, Idaho. Following basic training and further training as a radarman, Arvid sailed on the U.S.S. Audubon for the remainder of World War II. He crossed the Pacific eight times and participated in the invasion of Okinawa.
After the war, Arvid received training as a watchmaker and worked for Diebold Safe and Lock. He spent 2 ½ years traveling throughout the Dakotas and Montana. Although the job paid well, he decided to quit so that he could settle down and get married.
Arvid married Dona Jean Weigel on June 28, 1952, in St. Paul. They had three children who were the center of their lives. Arvid's true love was helping his sons achieve their full potential in sports. He enjoyed the fruits of his labors his whole life, as all three of his children found success in their chosen professions.
Arvid worked at several jobs, including five years at the Pine Bend Refinery, before finally finding a home as a Systems Control Technician at 3M Company, where he worked for over 25 years. He enjoyed his job, but was happy to retire early, at the age of 58. That gave him time to pursue his hobbies, which included fishing and hunting, to live where he wanted, and the freedom to visit his children and grandchildren. On those visits, his family, and countless others, frequently benefited from Arvid's ability to repair just about anything.
Arvid had great faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. He was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Arvid was preceded in death by his parents Roy and Edna (Kimple) Morris, wife Dona (Weigel) Morris, brothers Deane and Stanley Morris, and son-in-law Steve Cottingham.
He is survived by his children, Marsha Cottingham, Jack (Jennifer) Morris, and Tom (Lisa) Morris; 8 grandchildren, Kyle (Becca), Cody, Austin, Erik (Jennifer), Miles, Kirk (Cheryl), Scott (Kara), and Connor; 16 great grandchildren; sisters Elaine Bachman and Lila Mae Nelson; and many other relatives and friends.
