Betty Jane McCoy, of Braham, passed away on Tuesday, December 16, 2025, at GracePointe Crossing Assisted Living in Cambridge. She was 89 years old.
Betty was born on July 8, 1936, on a farm near Prophetstown, Illinois, to Lloyd and Margaret (Sibley) Elgin. She graduated from Graceville High School in 1954 and married the love of her life, Ben McCoy, on September 24, 1955. They soon welcomed three children: Becky, Billy, and Bart into their loving family. After a few years of living in Spring Lake Park, they made their home in Rush Point, MN, to begin farming and joined Calvary Lutheran Church in 1962, where Betty was the Sunday Superintendent for quite some time.
Betty will always be remembered as a bright, high-spirited soul with a great smile who wasn’t afraid to speak her mind. She worked in many different jobs throughout her life, including cashiering at the Rush Point Store, selling Avon, writing the gossip column for the local newspaper, Project Teach, Control Data, and Medtronic.
Family was important to Betty, and she taught all of us that “family will always be there”. She loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and was recently blessed to be a great-great-grandma. Spending time at “The Farm” will be a memory for everybody who knew and loved her. Holidays, family reunions, birthdays, pig roasts, and retirements were always spent at “the farm”.
Betty enjoyed fishing, four-wheeling, trips to Lake of the Woods, and going to the local hangouts, catching up with neighbors, and playing a few pull tabs. She also enjoyed sneaking up to the casino to try her luck on the Slot Machines. Tuesdays were reserved for meeting with Medtronic's friends for laughter and catching up on news; she did this for several years after she retired. She and Ben enjoyed traveling and took cross-country trips to enjoy the scenery and visit relatives in Illinois, Texas, Montana, Colorado, California, and Mississippi, where they did some deep-sea fishing as well as several other places.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents and husband, Ben; son-in-law Ron Majzner; brothers: Johnny Elgin, Robert, and Lenard; sister Darlene Olen; and sisters-in-law Cathy and Arlene Eglin.
She is survived by her children: Becky Majzner, Bill (Deanna) McCoy, and Bart (Tracy) McCoy; grandchildren: Jeremy (Danielle), NaTasha (Sam), Billie Jo (Joseph), Josh (Jessica), Nathan (Amy), Ben (Samantha), Holly (Michael), Brandi (Ben) and Michael (Lindsey); 19 great grandchildren; two great great grandchildren; brothers: Clarence, Donald (Beth), Thomas (Marla) Elgin; sister-in-law: Teri Elgin, and as well as many other relatives and friends.
A Memorial Service will be held at 1:00 pm on Sunday, December 21, 2025, at the Calvary Ev. Lutheran Church in Rush Point with Rev. Dr. Vicki Vander Vegt officiating.
Memorial Visitation will be held 1 hour prior to the service, beginning at 12:00 pm (Noon).
Inurnment will be in the Calvary Ev. Lutheran Cemetery in Rush Point.
