Byron Gilbert Smith, of Isanti, formerly of St. Francis, passed away on Friday, June 16, 2023, at Our Lady of Peace Hospice in St. Paul, Minnesota. He was 76 years old.
Byron was born on June 12, 1947, in Braham, Minnesota to parents Benjamin and Mildred “Millie” (Fisher) Smith. The eldest of 3 boys, he grew up in Grasston until 1961 when the family moved to St. Francis, MN, graduating in 1966. After high school, he worked for Cornelius Inc. in Ramsey in the shipping/receiving department for around 5 years. Byron then began his career as a PARA working at various High Schools before retiring from Spring Lake Park. For many years Byron also worked part-time at the Sheriff’s Boys Ranch in Isanti.
A hobby farm near Lake George, allowed Byron to raise cows, pigs, sheep, and horses’ which he always called “his ponies”. He built and maintained BG Storage which allowed him to meet new people.
Byron was a proud part of the Andover AA club, recently receiving his 45-year sobriety chip. He was a sponsor and friend to many over those years. Byron was so proud and supportive of all the accomplishments of his son and his twin grandsons. He will always be remembered as the “buy, sell, trade” guy who cared more about people than things. He will be dearly missed.
Byron was preceded in death by his parents, and brothers Kyle and Wynn.
He is survived by his son Patrick (Shannon); grandsons, Sullivan and Sawyer; aunt Peggy Smith; as well as many beloved close cousins, other relatives and friends.
