Carl Samuel Johnson passed away on Friday, August 9, 2024, at his farm in Brunswick. He was 87 years old.
Carl was born on November 2, 1936, on the same farm in Brunswick to parents Claus and Hilda (Larson) Johnson. His father came over from Sweden in 1929 and Carl was anticipating the farm being in the family for 100 years (He was hoping to be there for that milestone).
He was baptized and confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Brunswick. Carl attended the Brunswick Country School before graduating from Mora High School in 1954. He hauled milk for the Brunswick Creamery before leaving for White Sands, New Mexico in 1955 to serve two years in the US Army.
He married Delores Marquart in 1968 and started building the house that would eventually be home to five kids, Angie, Connie, Laurie, Arik, and Karie. He was a kind and forgiving Dad who never yelled and rarely got angry. He was very supportive and proud of his kids, grandkids, and his great grandson.
He worked construction for CS McCrossan in the cities for 17 years before being diagnosed with colon cancer and given less than a five-year survival rate. He decided to spend more time with his family, so he bought a few more Jersey cows and started farming full-time. A family of seven survived on the udders of, at the most, 22 Jersey milking cows and the frugality and ingenuity of a stubborn farmer.
In 1992, Carl was hit by a car while walking to a high school football game in Mora. A traumatic brain injury affected his life from that point on. About 19 years later, he suffered a stroke. In spite of these hurdles, he was still able to live on the farm, a testament to his grit and stubbornness. With the help of the VA Care In Your Community program, Kanabec County Public Health, and St. Croix Hospice, the last year would have been almost impossible.
A special thanks to Farrah, Jeff, Laurie, and Stephanie at Kanabec County. Kennedi, Jessica, and Caitlyn at St. Croix hospice for the care and support.
Rest in peace Dad and know that the farm is in good hands; and will hopefully remain in the family for another 100 years. We love you.
Carl was preceded in death by his parents, siblings, Lorraine (Haldo) Carlson, Raymond (Helen), Russell, and Alice (Harvey) Strandlund.
He is survived by Delores “Dee” (Marquart) Johnson and their children, Angie Johnson, Connie (Jeffrey) Wetzel, Laurie (Steve) Schommer, Arik Johnson, and Karie (Rob) Lake; grandchildren, Tanner (Megan), Mariah (Drew), Hannah, Ellie (Quinn), Ben (Tori), Kassandra (Alec), Katrina, and Austin; great grandson Lincoln; many nieces, other relatives and friends.
A Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, August 17, 2024 at the Hamilton Funeral Homes -Akkerman Chapel in Mora.
Visitation will be held 1 hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
Interment will be in the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery in Brunswick.
