Carol Wilma Reese, of Howard, South Dakota, formerly of the Braham area, passed away on Tuesday, May 24, 2022 at the Good Samaritan Home in Howard, SD. She was 90 years old.
Once upon a time, actually August 19, 1931, a 5th child (of 6) Carol Wilma was added to the family of Charles and Rachel (Walden) Reese, on the family farm near West Bend, WI. She passed away under Hospice care at the age of 90, May 24, 2022 in Howard, SD. For a child with a somewhat limited future, she certainly over-achieved longevity!
By the time she was approximately 7, the family moved to Kanabec County (Mora area) MN. Here she was raised by a single mother and her siblings until 1957 when her mother died. This is when Carol learned to adapt to several different living situations – which included a group home, foster homes and in 1977 joining her recently widowed sister Henri’s household in Braham, MN. In 1986, this Duo moved to Albany, NY for 3 years before returning to the Midwest and settling in Carthage, SD. Her most recent chapter since 2013, was as a resident of The Good Samaritan Home in Howard, SD, where she established herself as a well-loved friend to both staff and her roommate.
Being raised by a mother who had ‘Magic Fingers’ when busying herself with yarn, crochet threads, and fabrics, Carol, too, was always working on creating a project of one kind or another. This might be knitting a blanket, doing Latch Hook, creating yarn-covered hangers, adding a pocket to a garment that NEEDED one, or doing a lot of coloring! All of these works of art were generously shared with any and all admirers!
Carol had a lot of favorites. Gene Autry made the top of her list, followed by family pets, a variety of stuffed animals and dolls, treats and cake, and every activity happening at Good Sam. But, MOST of all she had a favorite day----HER Birthday!! She’d make sure that everyone she met knew it was her special day! And possibly followed that statement with, “What did you get me?” Another Carol-ism (her own twisted quote) will always be a family favorite, when about 20 years ago she declared, "I'm too OLD to Die!"
Carol is survived by her brother, Leonard (JoAnne) Farmington, NM and multiple generations of nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Rachel, brothers Charles, Fred, and Glen, sister Henrietta Truh and their spouses.
