Clara DeVries, passed away on Thursday, December 21, 2023, at GracePointe Crossing in Cambridge. She was 91 years old.
Clara was born on December 29, 1931, in Pease, Minnesota, the middle child of 7 born to Ben and Jennie (Robyn) Miedema. At age 7, the family moved to the Ogilvie area, where Clara attended country school .Then the family moved near Ann Lake and again to the Lewis Lake area. As a teenager, Clara worked a nanny job for 2 years with the Branlee family in Milaca, caring for their 6-year-old son and helping with household chores.
Clara met John DeVries Jr through church in Ogilvie and the couple married on June 2, 1950, at the Christian Reformed Church in Ogilvie. Together they made their home near Dalbo and they were blessed with eight children. Once the youngest was in school, Clara took a job at Motek in Cambridge, where she worked as a grinder operator for over 20 years. Clara enjoyed life in Dalbo, keeping her 5 acres of lawn immaculately mowed, caring for her huge vegetable garden and flower beds, and feeding the birds and squirrels.
As her children grew, she supported each child in their activities and sports, keeping statistics and almost never missing a home or away game. Clara was a wonderful cook and baker, especially her homemade bread, cinnamon rolls, buns and donuts. She was always prepared to feed her family with a big home cooked meal. Clara had a strong faith throughout her life and was a member of several churches, including the Christian Reformed Churches in both Ogilvie and Pease. She served with the Ladies aide, participated in the quilting club, and prayed daily for her family and friends.
She enjoyed traveling, playing cards and scrabble, going to garage sales, and fishing. Her artistic skills were apparent in her beautiful hand painted animal rocks, the quilts she made for each of her children, and the furniture and décor she built in her woodshop. Most of all, Clara loved her family, she had a special connection with each of her children and grandchildren and cherished their time together. She will be dearly missed.
She is preceded in death by her parents, husband John DeVries Jr., siblings Jennie (Harlo) Lesher, Willy Miedema, Florence (Willard Rask and Lloyd Lindquist), and Laverne (Dwaine) McKinnon.
Clara is survived by her children, Sharon (Wesley) Hohn, Connie (Jim) Huspek, Dan (Roxanne), Brian (Mary), Pamela (Randy) Edblad, Roxanne (Jeff) Robinson, Jessica (Tyler) Sinclair, and Joshua (Jill); 18 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren; sisters, Sylvia (Gerrit) Bos and Wilma (Steve) Radsom; sisters and brothers-in-law, Anna Mae Miedema, Phyllis Houtsma, Eileen (Fritz) VanderVegt, Dick (Carol) DeVries and Michele DeVries; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
The family would like to extend their sincere thanks and gratitude to the staff at GracePointe Crossing and Allina Hospice for their excellent care and compassion for Clara over the years.
