DAVID OIEN Obituary

David Alton Oien, of Mora, passed away on Tuesday, May 2, 2023 at the St. Clare Living Community Rehab in Mora.  He was 93 years old.

David was born in Mora, Minnesota on May 19, 1929 to parents Tilman and Sigrid (Ugland) Oien.  He grew up in the Mora area and was baptized and confirmed at the Calvary Lutheran Church.  He attended the Hamilton Country School before graduating from Mora High School in 1947.  After high school, he became a Station Agent in DuBois, Idaho for the railroad for a year before returning home.  David worked for McGarry Bros Construction as a heavy equipment operator in the summer months and Kanabec Electric Co. in the winter months from 1949 to 1951.

On December 30, 1950, David was united in marriage to LaVonne Mae McGregor at the Calvary Lutheran Church.  They were blessed with four children.

David was inducted into the United States Army on March 14, 1951, serving 2 years before his discharge as a Corporal in 1953.  He returned to his work in construction and as an electrician.  In 1956, David began working full time for Mattson Electric and purchased the business from Clarence Mattson in 1974.  With LaVonne’s help in the office, they continued with the business until their retirement in 1991.

David enjoyed the outdoors, hunting and fishing, and road trips across the country with LaVonne.  Their cabin on Mille Lacs Lake became a favorite spot for fishing and family get togethers.  His love of baseball started while playing in high school and continued throughout his life, almost never missing a Twins game.  David was a member of the Kanabec Conservation Club, Ducks Unlimited, and Mora Lions.  He was the longest living member of Calvary Lutheran church and was a 70-year member of the Mora American Legion and a past commander.  He will be dearly missed by his family and friends.

David was preceded in death by his parents, wife LaVonne, son Jon, brother Emmett, sister-in-law Janet and brother-in-law Glenn Jones.

He is survived by his children, Diane (Leon) Lofgren, Steve (Donna), Nancy (Mark) Antonson; grandchildren, Tara, Jake (Kara), Krista, Sondra (Erick), Jeffrey (Christin), Paul (Charlyn), Jamie, Brooke (Nick), Emily (Josh) and Paige; 18 great grandchildren; 5 great great grandchildren; brother Wallace (Ann) Oien; sisters-in-law Beverly Oien and Lorelle Jones; brother-in-law Kenton (Marilyn) McGregor and many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
