Dennis Henry Schimming of Mora passed away peacefully on Tuesday, August 19, 2025, at Welia Health in Mora, Minnesota. He was 88 years old.
Dennis was born on September 12, 1936, in Isle Harbor Township to Gustave and Milda (Heitman) Schimming. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith and graduated from Isle Public School in 1954. After working for a year, he joined the U.S. Army, proudly serving at Fort Lewis in Washington and Fort Wainwright in Alaska, where he was part of the Alaska Ski Patrol. He was honorably discharged in 1957 and returned to start his farm, milking Holstein cows.
When not farming in Kanabec County, he worked in quarries and did masonry work, taking him to Au Sable Forks, New York, as well as the Sandstone and Isle Granite Quarries. He also worked at Amoco Plastics. Dennis was blessed with four beautiful children: Lyman, Elliot, Nicholas, and Robin. On March 28, 1983, he married Elaine Johnson (Steckelberg) at Zion Lutheran Church in Mora.
In his spare time, Dennis enjoyed reading Western novels and any other genre he could find. He was a history enthusiast and would tackle word-seeking puzzle books, often completing them within a week. During the summer, in addition to growing corn, oats, and hay, Dennis tended to his vegetable garden. He loved deer hunting and never missed a season. He was always willing to help build deer stands.
Dennis was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Elaine, daughter Robin, and siblings: Lyman, Dale, and Ileen Marose.
He is survived by his children: Lyman (Krista), Elliot (Michael), and Nicholas (Mindi); grandchildren: Becka, Cody, Bryce, Luca, Tiana, Bailey, and Demetrus; great-grandchildren: Stella, Margot, and Willy; and many nieces, nephews, and other family and friends.
