Dorothy Ann Fenske, of Duluth, passed away on Thursday, May 26, 2022 at River Hill Assisted Living in Duluth.  She was 92 years old.

Dorothy Ann was born April 13, 1930 in Gaylord, MN.  She and her parents Herbert and Elsie (Schultz) Fenske moved from Gaylord to Giese in the fall of 1935 and lived on the Rudolph and Doretta Fenske farm, one mile west and one mile south of Highway #18.

In December of 1935, the Rudolph Fenske farm house caught on fire.  At the age of 5, Dorothy ran to the barn in stocking feet, no coat in -30 degree temperature to let the men doing chores know that the house was on fire.  She ran to the barn twice because they didn’t come quick enough. The house was a complete loss!

Lorna recalls walking with Dorothy, Florence and Elwood, the ¾th of a mile each day to the county road to get the school bus; no matter the weather – rain, snow or sunshine. On one occasion Dorothy took her lunch out of the Karo syrup lunch pail and threw it in the ditch. She didn’t like what Mom had packed her for lunch.

In her early years Grandma Amanda Schulz taught her a favorite hymn, “Jesus Loves Me”.  Dorothy made her Confirmation in 1946 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Giese.  Dorothy was in her teens when she moved to Faribault. Over the years she worked in several towns; Cambridge, Duluth and others. She was a very good worker and one that they could depend on.

Dorothy and her friend Bud would go camping in Bud’s motorhome. They spend a lot of time together. On their last camping trip Bud had a heart attack. Dorothy, knowing that a train passed north of the campground, ran through the woods and down the track to get help, but it was too late.

After Bud died, Dorothy moved back to an apartment in East Duluth. For many years she worked for Vern Fossum and his company, cleaning apartments, laundry rooms and buildings. She had a garden in the yard of the upper duplex where she lived. The inside of her apartment was spotless and she had lots and lots of house plants.

For many years the Fenske siblings would take Dorothy out to the Perkins restaurant in East Duluth for her birthday. She would always order the roast beef dinner and LEMON MERINGUE PIE! During covid in 2021, Lorna and Dallas dropped off half a lemon pie for her birthday which she really enjoyed!

She is survived by her brother, Curtis (Janice) Fenske; sisters, Lorna (Dallas) Leier, Donna Fenske, Joyce (Bruce) Stecker; special friends Vernon (Linda) Fossum; as well as many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
