Nature 36

September 29, 1941 ~ January 19, 2024 (age 82) 82 Years Old

Gerhardt “Gary” Ludwig Steiner passed away unexpectedly on January 19, 2024 at North Memorial Hospital at the age of 82 years surrounded by those he loved.

Gary was born on September 29, 1941 at home in Center City, MN to John and Elviera (Hohn) Steiner. They bought a farm near Kroschel where he lived until his father passed away then his family moved to the Mora area. Gary worked as a carpenter siding and roofing houses. He was well known for being very meticulous in his craftsmanship (This is why he owned hundreds of tape measures). He would say “if your going to do a job, do it right”.

Gary and Karen Lilienthal along with their friends Butch “Arlen” and Marilyn Bachman eloped to Balsam Lake, WI and both couples were married on November 4, 1966 at a church. Karen and Gary lived in Mora, Anoka, and Rush City as Gary did siding and roofing. They purchased the Lilienthal family farm in Pomroy and moved there in April 1969. Gary was self-employed doing many roofing and siding jobs all over the state. Gary and Karen were blessed with three children Jesse, and the twins, Marty and Marna. Terry Graber was a huge part of Gary's life. He was his friend and neighbor that was always available whenever he needed him.

Gary worked Union Construction until he retired. After retirement he kept himself so busy that he would comment on how he didn’t know how he ever had a job because he was so busy. He enjoyed his time visiting at Double D Garage and Oslin Lumber. Gary would make his rounds stopping to see if his children needed anything and visiting with friends. He would take the grandkids on adventures up north to state parks, camping, and frogging. They loved it and talked so much about it. Gary had the gift to gab. He always had a joke to tell. He loved hunting with hounds, fishing, coon hunting, deer hunting, rodeos, being at Kelly Lake, and just being outside. He could sure tell a story! He had a love for auctions- hay, farm, cattle, you name it, and miles didn’t matter. Every year he made the trek to Niellsville, WI and Waverly, Iowa for the ‘big horse auctions’. He enjoyed canning, making jams and juices. He would share these with anyone who he talked to about it. He loved spending time with family hiking, visiting, playing cards, going to baseball games, and camping. He loved a good chicken dinner, usually from Jack’s Shack.

Gary was preceded in death by his parents, John and Elviera Steiner, brothers, Frank Steiner, Mitchell Steiner and Marvin Dresler; brother-in-law Art Huebner, sister-in-law Sally Steiner.

Gary is survived by his wife of 57 years Karen; sister Beverly Huebner; children, Jesse (Cathy), Marty (Cindy), and Marna (Randy) Stillday; grandchildren, Emily (Leigh) Seifert, Christopher Drabant, Jordan (Beth) Nelson, Samantha (Tony) Londer, Riley (Erika) Nelson, Hunter (Hayden), Sierra, Cole, Jagger, Daniel, Georgia; 7 great grandchildren; sister-in-law Wanda Dresler; and many other family and friends.
