Farming Rural 21

May 28, 1925 ~ January 6, 2024 (age 98) 98 Years Old

Glen Paul Sawyer, age 98, of Mora, Minnesota, passed away on Saturday January 6, 2024 at the Eastwood Senior Living center in Mora.

Glen was born on May 28, 1925 at Fairview Hospital in Minneapolis Minnesota to Paul and Lucy (Rohann) Sawyer. The family lived in the Minneapolis area until 1934.  At a young age, Glen gave his heart to Jesus, and was baptized at the First Baptist Church in downtown Minneapolis in 1933. The following year, his folks bought a farm just outside of Mora on Spring Brook Hill, plus the family had grown with the addition of an adopted baby sister, Charlotte Ann.

Glen loved farming and that love stayed with him for the rest of his life. He attended the Whittier country school south of Mora through the eighth grade and went to Mora High School for the ninth grade. He was given the option of farming or go back to school the next year, and he chose farming.

By the time he was 18 in 1943, World War II was in full swing, and Glen was called to Fort Snelling in St Paul. When they asked what his occupation was, he said he was a full time farmer on his dads farm. They sent him back home to help provide food for the nation.

In the fall of 1945, Glen was introduced to a young local gal, Marcella Wohlenhaus. Their first date was going to a Mora football game. They were married June 30, 1946 and lived in a small log house on Spring Brook Hill the first two years. Their first child Charlene was born in August of 1947, then came Donn in 1949, followed by Mark in 1953, David in 1956, Karin in 1959 and Robert in 1960.

In 1953, Glen started a new job driving school bus for Mora, and also took a custodian job at the school. School bus driving became a long time position, driving for over 51 years, doing a regular route as well as driving for sports teams and other school events.

In the spring of 1957, Glen and Marcella purchased a farm just east of Brunswick. The farm changed over the years, and a big change came in 1969 when more land was purchased and more cows were added to milk. He also had a summer job at Mora schools as Glen was the main painter at Mora for 28 years. All of his kids learned to paint because of his meticulous skills.

In 1985, youngest son Robert and his wife Janet purchased the farm and continued to milk cows for a few more years. After slowing down on the milking scene, Glen kept busy by doing field work for neighbors, cutting wood with his close friend Don Erickson, going to many sporting events and being with family.

In 2007, Glen and Marcella moved into Park Forest apartments in Mora due to Marcella’s decline in health. As her health failed, and when she was moved to the nursing home, Glen was daily by her side. Marcella passed away in September 2010, and Glen continued to live at Park Forest until September 2023. His last few months were spent at St Clare’s Rehab Center and Eastwood Senior Living.

Glen was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church in Mora, previously a member of the Brunswick Baptist Church. He loved to share his faith and talked about Jesus and his family until his last hours.

Glen is proceeded in death by his parents, wife Marcella, son Mark and sister Charlotte Strelow.

He is survived by his children, Charlene (Phil) Evenson of Prescott Valley, AZ, Donn (Sharon) Sawyer of Pease, MN, Dave (Jill) Sawyer of Mora, Karin (Lars) Polson of Millville, MN and Robert (Janet) Sawyer of Stromsburg, NE.; 18 grandchildren and 35 great grandchildren, sister-in-law Ilene Wohlenhaus; many extended family including the Lynning Peterson family as well as many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
