IRENE E JOHNSON

Irene Johnson, of Mora, passed away on Sunday, January 29, 2023 at Eastwood Senior Living in Mora.  She was 93 years old.

Irene Erickson Johnson was born July 8, 1929 in Mora, MN to John and Edith (Allman) Erickson of Mora.  She attended the Whittier School through the eighth grade and was a graduate of Mora High School Class of 1946.  At the age of sixteen she started working at Gorham’s Hardware in Mora as a bookkeeper and salesclerk.  Irene always called those five years her college education.  She grew from a very shy kid into a young woman who found out she liked talking to people and she liked retail sales.  The rest of her working career included several jobs in sales, bookkeeping and helping people.

Irene and Loren Johnson were married December 25, 1949 at Grace Lutheran Church in Mora, MN.  In 1968 the family, including son Randy and daughter Julianne, moved to the Boston area.  They lived in Topsfield, MA for 26 years where for most of that time they together owned and operated the Flight Center at the Beverly Airport.

Irene and Loren returned to Minnesota in 1994 living in the Cambridge area.  Loren died in 2002.  Irene moved back to Mora in 2003 to be close to friends and her church, Grace Lutheran.

Irene loved flowers and going on garden tours throughout her lifetime.  She began her painting career at the age of 60, enjoying this gift from God that she didn’t realize she had.  She also loved traveling and being with family and friends.  She was member of Kanabec Art Association, Kanabec History Center and Grace Lutheran Church of Mora.

She was preceded in death by her parents John and Edith (Allman) Erickson; husband Loren; sisters, Dorothy Jensen and Lorraine Erickson; infant children, Shelby, Matthew and Kristina (due to Rh disease).

Irene is survived by her son Randy (Rosalie) Johnson of Dover, NH; daughter Julianne of MN; brother John Erickson of Minneapolis; plus several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 am on Tuesday, May 23, 2023 at the Grace Lutheran Church in Mora. 

Inurnment will be in the Oakwood Cemetery in Mora.
