Joe Marvin Oslund, of Mora, passed away on Wednesday, July 12, 2023, at his home. He was 85 years old.
Joe was born on the family farm in Brunswick Township, Minnesota on February 25, 1938, to parents Marvin and Laura (Greenwald) Oslund. He attended Coin Country School and then Mora High School, graduating in 1957. While in high school, Joe participated in a work study class at Northern Wood in Mora where he discovered his lifelong love for woodworking. He began his career working for a cabinet maker in the twin cities but eventually left to start his own cabinet shop, Joe’s Woodworks, which he ran from his homes over the years.
Joe was united in marriage to Donna Mae Groen in 1966 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Brunswick. In 1965, Joe purchased 3 acres with five cabins on Fish Lake near Mora. After running them for a short time, more land was purchased to gradually build campsites. The cabins were later taken down and converted to lakeview sites. They ran the campground for 40 years before retiring, giving Joe time to build a twin home on Fish Lake. In 2021, They made a final move to a home on the golf course.
For 16 years, Joe and Donna spent their winter months in Mission, Texas. Joe enjoyed trips to Mexico, making fresh orange juice, and attending all the social gatherings- especially the Polka Jams. Joe was an avid Minnesota sports fan, supporting the Twins, Vikings, and Gophers. He enjoyed the Crystal coffee group and keeping up with the happenings in Mora. As a lifelong member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church, Joe not only served on the church council, but was instrumental in building the parsonage and the addition to the original church. His passion for woodworking continued throughout his life with countless small projects that can still be found around his home and those of his family and friends. He will be dearly missed.
