Lorna Mae Haasken, of Mora, passed away on Wednesday, May 7, 2025 at the St. Clare Living Community in Mora. She was 97 years old.
Lorna Mae was born in August 1927 to parents Albert and Elizabeth Kellermann in Waconia MN. She was the youngest of 5 children. Lorna was raised on a farm in Carver county and attended school in Waconia where she graduated from high school in 1946. As a child she was raised in an era of depression where meeting ones needs was the focus not ones wants. Lorna learned to garden, can vegetables and fruit as there were no refrigerators or freezers. She also became quite skilled hand sewing to mend garments and darning socks. Just replacing worn articles with new ones was not an option.
Lorna was in high school when she met her husband to be, George, at a dance, and they married in 1948. They moved to Minneapolis to start their life together. Lorna found employment at TCF financial corporation and George found work in construction. Lorna later worked in the Minneapolis school systems lunch program preparing and serving children for almost 30 years. They were blessed with 2 children Barbara and Bruce. Lorna and George loved dancing, playing cards, and music. Lorna had a tremendous ear for music. She had a beautiful voice, and despite minimal lessons, played the piano beautifully. As a pastime she enjoyed reading, making jellies, canning and freezing veggies and fruit. Her greatest joy was her grandchildren and great grandchildren from their time as babies following and encouraging their accomplishments big and small. She was a wonderful cook and true to her heritage no one ever left the table hungry She was a devout Christian who attended church, taught her children to pray, supervised their religious studies, and taught them to be grateful for the Lords blessings.
They purchased a farm in Brook Park. After George’s passing Lorna lived alone on the farm for several years, there true to her heritage she cooked fabulous meals for her family and those helping run the farm. She then moved to Park Forest senior living apartments in Mora. When challenges and needs mandated more help she moved to St. Clare's assisted living, rehab, and nursing facility in Mora. She played piano there at 97 years of age to the delight of other residents who enjoyed and recognized music from their common youthful era. She missed family though, the old days, knowing how everyone was and what was happening in their lives. She so enjoyed visits, calls, cards, and flowers from her family.
Lorna is preceded in death by her parents, husband George, daughter Barbara, brothers and sisters and their spouses, Albert (Hilma) Kellermann, Verna (Maurice) Miller, Elizabeth (Robert) Anderson, Frederick (Irene) Kellermann; brothers and sisters-in-law; Carl (Ethel, Susan) Haasken, Dale Hron, Marcellus (Cletus) Wagner, Florence (Owen) Papke, Irene (Don) Steinbreuck, Pauline Henkensiefken; niece Maxine Benton; nephews, Robert Miller and Arlo Kellermann.
She is survived by her son Bruce (Linnea), son-in-law Robert (Ann) Miles, grandchildren Bryce (Jennifer) Haasken, Steven (Stephanie) Haasken, Terese Haasken (Nick Holmstadt), Katie (Sean) Langford, Scott (Betty) Miles, and Amber Miles; 16 great grandchildren.
