Sonja Elaine Cole, of Mora, Minnesota, passed away on Thursday, April 24, 2025 at the St. Clare Living Community in Mora, at the age of 86.
Sonja was born on July 22, 1938, at home in Ann Lake Township, Kanabec County, Minnesota to Carl and Bertha (Aarhus) Morgenweck. She grew up on a farm and attended Riverside Grade School and graduated from Ogilvie High School in 1956. After graduation, she worked at the Farmer’s Coop Creamery (until it closed), Land O’ Lakes, Kanabec Hospital and the Riverwood Centers (from which she retired).
On August 8, 1964, she was united in marriage to Earl Cole and they made their home on a farm in Peace Township. She continued to work in Mora while helping with farm chores and tending to her flowers and a garden. Earl passed away on February 6, 1987.
In later years, she met Harvey Kittelson of Rice Lake, WI and they were married July 14, 1990. They made their home in Rice Lake, WI where Harvey worked for the Highway Dept. After his retirement they spent several years traveling and gardening.
In 2000 she returned to Mora and continued working at Riverwood Centers. She enjoyed gardening with her sister, traveling with friends around the United States, visiting her brother in Denver, CO, a sister in Tulsa, OK and longer trips to Germany and Norway.
She enjoyed being a part of the events at Calvary Lutheran Church where she was an active part of the choir, played organ and piano, the CLCW, baked goodies for fellowship, and helped maintain the church flower beds. Besides gardening, she enjoyed sewing projects and reading. She was a resident of Park Forest Estates in Mora and enjoyed baking treats for many of the residents there. Her family was very special to her and all family events were treasured.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Earl and Harvey; sister Betty Raber.
She is survived by her sister Faye Carroll of Mora; brothers, Dennis Morgenweck of Mora, Ralph Morgenweck of Denver, Co; step-daughters, Linda Black and Barbara Barlage; and several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Memorial services will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, May 3, 2025, at Calvary Lutheran Church with Pastor Stephen Sylvester officiating.
Memorial Visitation will be held 1 hour prior to the service at church.
Inurnment will be in the Oakwood Cemetery in Mora.
Memorials are preferred to the Calvary Lutheran Church in Mora to the LCW or Music Programs
