Thomas “Tom” E. Lind, of Mora, passed away Wednesday, July 10, 2024 at the Saint Cloud VA Care Center. He was 73 years old.
Tom was born on November 23, 1950, in Minneapolis, MN to parents Vernon and Betty (McGee) Lind. As a young boy, he would often spend time with his grandfather Alfred in the Ann Lake area. He graduated from Roosevelt High School.
Tom joined the Naval Reserves and after about a year became barred and accepted orders for 2 years active duty aboard the USS Hancock CVA19 aircraft carrier as tractor driver on the flight deck. During his service, he crossed over the equator making him a Navy Shellback, of which he was extremely proud. After his discharge from the Navy, he rejoined the Reserves for a year.
Tom returned home to Minnesota where he took a 30-year job as a truck driver for the City of Minneapolis. He was blessed with one son, Shawn, through a long relationship with his sons’ mother Mary.
A lifelong gearhead, Tom also worked in a number of different Service Garages as a certified Welder and Mechanic over the years. He enjoyed the challenge of fixing anything with his hands.
In 1980 Tom bought land on Ann Lake to spend weekends at the cabin. After his retirement in 2004, he permanently moved to Ann Lake. He enjoyed old cars and tractors, motorcycles, camping, picnics, and garage sales. Tom was a lifetime member of VFW #246 and USS Hancock CVA19 Association as well as a member of the Eagles #34, EC Riders snowmobile club in Mora, and the Ann Lake Watershed Alliance.
Tom was preceded in death by his parents.
He is survived by his son Shawn Lind and partner Casey of Golden Valley; brothers, Chuck Lind of Glendale, AZ and John (Kathy) Lind of Kingman, AZ; sister Peggy (Ralph) Anderson of Chandler, AZ; several nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
A Gathering of Family and Friends for viewing will be held from 1:00 - 3:00 pm on Friday, July 19, 2024 at the Hamilton Funeral Homes -Akkerman Chapel in Mora.
Military Honors will be held at 3:00 pm on Friday at the funeral home by the Mora American Legion Post 201.
Interment with Military Honors will be held at 12:30pm on Monday, July 22, 2024 at Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis - Assembly Area #4.
