WAYNE CARLSON Obituary

On December 14, 1936 in Braham, MN Wayne William Carlson was welcomed into the loving arms of Lawrence and Frances (Johnson) Carlson.  Wayne and his older brother Frank loved their life growing up on the family farm in Nessel Township.

Wayne attended the Goebel School for 1st and 2nd grade and then graduated from Braham High School in 1954. Wayne then attended the University of Minnesota’s Agriculture School. While attending the UofM, Wayne worked at Johnston’s appliance store. In 1957 Wayne and five of his classmates had an opportunity to go on a foreign exchange agriculture program to Sweden. After spending time in Sweden, Wayne and his friends traveled throughout Europe and then sailed back to America on the SS United States.

After completing the Ag school program Wayne served in the US Army for 5.5 years in the reserves and 6 months active duty as a photographer.  While Wayne was working in Minneapolis he met Barbara Hansen whom he would marry in 1962.  They eventually would move back to the home farm where they would raise their 4 children.  Barb passed away in 1988 from cancer.

Wayne worked at International Harvester in the cities for 13 years, commuting from the home farm for several of those years. Wayne farmed the home place in Nessel township for many years and then in 1995, Wayne used his skill as a big machine operator and his love for traveling to become an over the road truck driver for Transport America (Eagan).  While working there Wayne met Audrey who would become his beloved wife in 1999.  In Wayne’s 23 year career as a trucker he visited all of the lower 48 states, was a driver trainer for many students and attained a 1 million mile safe driver award from the American Trucking Association.

Wayne and Audrey moved back to the family farm after major renovations in 2011.  Wayne loved having family gatherings, holidays and hosting friends and neighbors at the farm.  In their free time Wayne and Audrey volunteered many hours at Calvary Lutheran Church (Rush Point) and Shalom (Cambridge).

During Wayne’s lifetime he had many wonderful experiences which included; a Dependent’s cruise on his son Mike’s US Nuclear Submarine the Lapon, seeing the Vikings play in London and meeting Rick Speilman (Vikings GM) and MANY road trips around the US.  Wayne loved attending sporting events with his children and grandchildren including: Vikings, Gophers, Twins, Timberwolves and Nascar. Wayne’s passions included photography, sports, history and telling stories.

Wayne was diagnosed with sarcoma in early 2023, and was treated by Dr. Meng Welliver and her team at the Mayo Clinic. In Wayne’s last days he was lovingly cared for by the St. Croix Hospice team, we are eternally grateful for their kindness and professionalism. Wayne passed away February 12, 2024 surrounded by his family at home.

Wayne is survived by his wife Audrey, children Mike (Joni) Surry, VA, Kim (Lance) Ashland, Rosemount,  Bob (Lora) Cambridge, Pete (April), Rush City, Step-daughter Sarah (Brad) Westvig, Chanhassen, Brother Frank (Ruth) Villa Park, IL, many grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and friends.
